Tall boots fabulous winter staple
You may have noticed my recent obsession with winter clothing! It is the truth that I find it a challenge to stay warm and stylish in winter, and Tasmania has a relatively short cold season compared to some places, it is only cold from late May to late August, and by that I mean temperatures of 0 celsius at night, with maximums of 10 or so in the day (those are generally my winter minimum). After that the sun has some warmth in the day again and often I only need a bit of heating in the morning and night. Our fairly mild winter is a mixed blessing, it means that most homes in Tasmania don’t have serious central heating like you would in the colder places in the Northern Hemisphere, and so to heat my house to 24 celcius like my house was when I was an exchange student in Germany is fairly costly, and according to the rest of my family, optional. They don’t feel as cold as I do. But for those 4 months I feel a bit like the Michelin man, I will often wear two jumpers plus a jacket in the house.
So, I am devoting my conscious image consultant energy to this problem.
I have discovered that I like stretch tube skirts and picked one up (brand new with tags) on depop, my new friend. It is a great place for people to sell all their mis-buys – those clothes that you thought that you would love and you have worn once or twice (or not at all). There are some good bargains and some less bargain ones that are amazing in other ways – a hard to find colour or style. There is a high waisted denim midi skirt on there that would be mine if it were two sizes smaller! Anyho!
And the best thing to wear with the midi skirt, if I am going to keep warm is long boots. There are a lot at retail at the moment, and if you live in Australia all of that winter stock is currently being cleared. Bricks and Mortar stores often have great prices in run out stock, so wander through your local cbd or shopping centre. Alternatively online often has more sizes (but may not be as cheap). Style tread has heaps of stuff, mostly in b fittings, and if you are hard to fit, just google what you are after such as boots for narrow feet etc and see what comes up. Frankie four and some other brands do nice looking shoes with removable footbeds that will fit orthotics etc.
So I hit style tread up the other week and these were some of the options that I found that would work for the clothes that I have in my wardrobe.
When buying a long boot in leather it is worth remembering that it will last for years (probably) so you should choose a colour and fit that you really like. Think about what heel height you will need – something you can walk in, or something wow that you don’t need to walk for hours in etc. And as far as the colour palette goes, there are plenty of blacks and browns around at the moment, and also more white than usual.
Long boots can be worn snug, which is best done under dresses and skirts, but there are also wider fits around that will work over skinny jeans and slim fit pants and be quite fun.
A different and very wearable iteration of the boot is the combat boot. There are a few of those around at the moment – mostly flats and lace ups, sometimes with a side zip as well for easy entrance. They tend to be mid calf length and can look arty with dresses and skirts and pretty postapocalyptic with trousers. They are a fashion look at the moment, so are quite wearable in that sense.
The right boot can make your old jeans and jumper suddenly have a new lease on life – more fun, stylish, edgy etc according to the boot selected.
There is such a variety of boots around these days that you should be able to find something that you like if you want to use them to keep your legs warmer in winter, either with pants or skirts. I really like them and am keeping the knee high Django and Juliet Millicent boot. You can let me know of any good boots that you find!
